The American western drama is based on a novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles. The movie takes us on a journey with the two protagonists, namely, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd and the little thirteen-year-old girl Johanna. Their journey of survival becomes the quintessence of the movie.

What is News of the World all about?

The movie's plot is based on captain Kidd reuniting the little girl with her last remaining family. Captain Kidd (played by Tom Hanks) was a member of the 3rd Texas Infantry. This man now travels from town to town to read the ‘news of the world.’ By the course of the events, he meets an orphaned girl who is taken by the Kiowa people. Captain somehow knew the little girl’s identity, and Kidd consents to accompany the kid across the cruel and unforgiving fields of Texas. On this journey, they face many difficult situations created by nature as well as human beings. But the emotional bond that flourishes between the two is phenomenal. You may shed a drop of tear or two at the end.

Is News of the World worth watching?

Some of the critics have claimed that the movie is somewhat slow but the general consensus is that News of the World is one of the best movies of 2021. It has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards, Art Directors Guild, won a couple of NBR awards, Phoenix Film Critics Society awards and has been nominated for 74+ other awards. The emotional melodrama takes up so much space that it becomes a little bit monotonous with a predictable ending. The beautifully crafted scenario, landscapes, and gunfights will draw your attention. The almost silent presence of the Kiowa-speaking girl is very expressive. Of course, Tom Hanks is phenomenal as his expressions, screenplay, and emotional performance in the end add so much to love about the movie. Overall, it is a movie worth watching and you don't want to miss it.
